Self Care

The Six Month Natural Hair Growth Project

I am a Mom.

A very busy Mom.

A very busy Mom, where self care somehow fell off of the priority list.

I was contacted by Kim Calhoun of Henry James Salon, (my stylist from “back in the day” when I USED to get my hair done every two weeks) to work with her on a project that we commissioned as the 6 Month Natural Hair Growth Challenge.

In this challenge our goals are to:

  • Educate on natural hair care.
  • Grow my hair at a rate of 1-1.5 inches per month.
  • Nourish my hair by introducing my hair to the product line Keratase Paris.
  • Create maintenance regiments between appointments.
  • Lastly, prioritize self care.

The Consultation

2013-09-04 10.48.18  I pulled my hair out of my “old faithful” ponytail holder, so that Kim could analyze my hair,(which she had not seen in a few years). I also gave her the time warning, that I had to be at Harley’s class by 2:30 to throw a classroom birthday party. (Mom work is NEVER done!)  After fingering through it, and a couple of head nods back and forth, she asked me a few questions.

Kim: What is you hair care regiment now?

Me: I wash every week, condition twice a week, and slap it in pony tail.

Kim: What products do you use?

Me: What ever is on sale at Target.

Kim: When is the last time you got your hair cut?

Me: Don’t remember, but some time this year.

By the end of questioning, I thought to myself that I really need to take better care of my hair!

We talked about my diet, and vitamin intake, and then she came up with a plan of action.

Kim said that my hair type is a 3B in the front, and 4 B in the back. Click here to see curl pattern types. With 3B in the front, my curl is loose and the 4B in the back is more of a tighter curl, and more of a coil. I have a much harder time dealing with my hair in the  back because it is more “snap, crackle, pop”!

She also identified thinning in the front, but no scalp issues. To stimulate growth, I should brush, and even have my girls brush my hair. Marsha Brady from the Brady Bunch said that you should brush your hair 100 strokes a day, really has some truth to it.  She said my hair should be trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

The Transformation

After shampooing and Kim deep conditioned me under the hood dryer.  Before kids, sitting under the dryer meant catching up on all of the magazines… it’s time to figure out a plan of attack for the rest of the day.

When I sat in Kim’s chair is when her magic began…
